Regular blogging has lots of benefits for your WordPress site.
B2C companies that post 16+ blogs a month receive 4.5 times the amount of traffic as companies that upload less than four. However, keeping your site consistently updated with new content can be challenging.
Maybe you’ve covered all the obvious areas, and aren’t sure which direction to move in next. Or maybe you feel like you’ve written about absolutely everything in your niche.
Everybody struggles to find new topic ideas occasionally, and there are plenty of ways to get inspired again. Read on for details of four techniques that will help you generate tons of new topic ideas for your site.

1. Use keyword research tools.
Making a list of the keywords you’re currently targeting, as well as the terms you’d like to target is a great place to start.
Type your keywords into a search engine and look at the suggested autocomplete results, noting down any that could be turned into blog posts.
For example, you might enter the keyword ‘holidays’ and see ‘holidays with toddlers’ as a suggestion.
This could inspire several different blog posts:
- Tips for Long Haul Flights with Toddlers
- Best All-Inclusive Resorts for Families with Toddlers
- Ten Thing to Do With Your Toddler on the Beach
If you don’t have many keywords on your list yet, try entering those that you do have into free keyword planning tools. You’ll be able to get inspired by top related terms, most popular sites, and search volume for different queries.
2. Browse question and answer sites.
The aim of a good blog post is to solve the reader’s problem.
And where can you find lots of real life problems? Question and answer sites and online communities, of course.
Spend some time on sites like Quora, Yahoo! Answers and Reddit, searching for your keyword and browsing in relevant categories. You’ll likely find some niche ideas that never would have occurred to you organically. For example, a search for ‘vegan’ on Reddit might yield lots of questions about eating gluten-free while being vegan.
This opens up a whole new world of gluten-free and vegan posts on your site – recipes, tips, lists, and more.
3. Check out your competition for topic ideas.
There’s nothing wrong with getting some inspiration from your competitors, as long as you don’t copy them directly.
Look out for:
- Posts that have high engagement
- Posts that have been shared widely on social media
- Posts that you could expand upon
- Posts that have been featured
If you see content that hasn’t performed well, ask yourself whether you could improve it to get different results.
4. Use the skyscraper technique.
New topic ideas don’t always have to be 100% original.
Simply going into greater depth on an existing topic is a wonderful idea. The skyscraper technique involves finding a topic that’s already been covered and then doing it better. Maybe you’ve seen a great article called ’10 Things to Do in Paris’.
Instead of trying to find a whole new spin on the topic, you could write a post titled ‘100 Things to Do in Paris’.
You don’t need to reinvent the wheel to create great content. Struggling to find new topic ideas for your WordPress site?
Try these tips and you’ll soon be overflowing with inspiration – get ready to use that scheduling tool.
